Contacting the School

Parents concerned about a student should follow this procedure:

  •   Telephone the college office.
  •   Give the student's name and form class.
  •   Ask the form teacher or other staff to contact them.
  •   Staff may be contacted by email

Parents are asked to keep the college informed of any changes to their contact details (i.e. home address, email address, phone numbers etc).

Reporting to Parents

Parents will be kept informed by regular newsletters.

Parents and Friends of Wentworth College

The school sees it as very important to have strong links with the Wentworth community; an important vehicle for achieving this is a vibrant and supportive Parents and Friends Group. The Parents and Friends meet regularly and all parents are welcome and strongly encouraged to participate.

Parental Assistance

The college welcomes the interest and involvement of parents. Some activities where parents may assist are, for example, as coaches/managers of sports and cultural teams or as library assistants.

Attendance, Sickness and Emergency

Under the Education Act, attendance at school is compulsory unless the student is unable to attend because of sickness, danger of infection, or the sudden and serious illness of a parent. The Principal, however, may exempt a student for a period not exceeding five days if satisfied there is sufficient reason for the absence. It is, therefore, outside the Principal's power to approve absence for shopping, holidays in school time, looking after younger members of the family, or sports or cultural fixtures arranged by clubs or outside organisations unless for regional or national representation. Leave is automatically given to students going to a doctor or dentist, but they are required to sign the register in the Student Support Office when they leave school and again when they return. The doctor's or dentist's appointment card is all the form teacher needs to see, but parents may write a letter if they wish. All absences due to sickness or similar causes must be explained by a note which must be handed to the form teacher on the first day of the student's return.

In cases of expected prolonged sickness, it would be appreciated if parents rang the school office giving advice of an absence on the first day of illness and follow it with a note on the student's return. In cases of short term absence for sickness, parents are asked to report this by telephone as early in the day as possible.

Students' request for leave from the school, except for doctor or dentist appointment, must be made in advance of the event taking place and preferably in writing. It is not sufficient for students or parents to tell a teacher or office staff that they intend taking time off.

Students are not permitted to leave the college grounds during lunch time.

Students are required to be punctual and to be at school by 8.30 am.

If a student is required to bring medication to school it should be lodged with the school office and will be made available when needed.

A sick or injured student must report to the office. Only after a parent has been contacted and can take care of the student will the student be released from the college.
